My history as a performing flautist in Classical and Liturgical Music idioms:

  • S. F. Opera Orchestra, as second flute and piccolo to my teacher, Paul Renzi. It was a rewarding and learning experience playing with him and in the grand San Francisco War Memorial Opera House.
  • Community orchestras in San Francisco Bay Area, including East Bay and Hayward orchestras and most recently in the Port Angeles (WA) Symphony.
  • Chamber groups, including A Basket of Flute (flute and string trio), numerous flute and piano/guitar/harp duos, a (nameless) woodwind quintet in Berkeley, CA, and currently, Chinook Winds (woodwind quintet and trio), Buttons 'n Bow (flute and cello), and Kim and Carlos, A Multimedia Excursion (a flute and upright bass duo that will include other media, e.g., photography, storytelling in performance)
  • Various ensembles with strings, keyboard, accordion in Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Austria
  • Btw, Buttons 'n Bow performed as featured soloists at concerts of The Northwest Womens' Chorale (April 2008) (In case you missed this excellent concert, a DVD is available for you to borrow - contact me)
  • Buttons 'n Bow also performed around Olympic Peninsula at casuals, in concert series, and in Juan de Fuca Festival (May 2009)
  • Kim and Carlos, A Multimedia Excursion has begun to perform at receptions and private parties on Whidbey Island and Puget Sound

Other Musical Accomplishments:

  • Composed, improvised, and performed music to accompany drama productions and stories around the Olympic Peninsula. These include Women Without Men; Walt Whitman, Mystic Poet; Medea; The Stronger; Puss 'n Boots; Rapunzel
  • Recorded and marketed CD Simple Selections of group with same name, and performed on CDs of others
  • Performed as singer (bass, tenor as needed) in staged and costumed productions of Oakland Opera Co. Venue: Paramount Theater, Oakland, Ca.
  • Directed women’s chorus, The Messengers , in Port Angeles
  • Directed church choirs in S. F. Bay Area and as substitute in Washington. Responsible for music selection, rehearsal, performance and occasionally keyboard accompaniment.
  • Won scholarship as a flute student from Bank of America donor to study with Paul Renzi
  • Attended and participated at first meeting of Wooden Flute Association at University of Washington (Seattle)

Classically related Education and Memberships:

  • B. A. Music, San Francisco State University, with an emphasis in theory, history, and literature
  • M. A. Music, Cal State University, Hayward (now, Cal State East Bay). I received special permission to pursue and incorporate an interest in Ethomusicology as part of my degree (see Ethnic Music).
  • Studied for several years with Mr. Renzi, (Principal, S. F. Symphony and NBC under Toscanini) as a private student and in masterclasses at SFSU
  • Past member in good standing of Musicians' Union, Local 6 (San Francisco), and Local 76-493 (Seattle)
  • Past participating member of National Flute Association (see jazz)
